My Husband's Lover, Making a Difference on Philippine Television

Last June 10, Philippine's leading broadcast company, GMA Network, aired its groundbreaking series that has changed the landscape of primetime television.  In a press statement, GMA Network is innovating content as it showcases an edgy theme that has never been aired as a series on Philippine TV.  Primetime viewing will never be the same again as GMA presents  the most provocative drama series of the network through My Husband's Lover.

Airing for almost a few weeks now, this intriguing drama tackles real issues on life, people, relationships and identity.  My Husband’s Lover, which dares to defy all conventions on traditional drama soaps as stated in the release, will both shape and shake the society as it aims to show that love is not defined or measured by sexual preference.

Directed by Dominic Zapata with the original concept of Suzette Doctolero, My Husband's Lover topbills award-winning actor Dennis Trillo, Kapuso homegrown artist Carla Abellana and theatre artist Tom Rodriguez.  Dennis and Carla have been lead stars of various top-rating GMA programs, both primetime and afternoon block, while this is Tom's first lead role on primetime television.

Completing the star-studded cast are Bettina Carlos, Karel Marquez, Kevin Santos and Pancho Magno with special participation of respected TV and movie stars Glydel Mercado, Ms. Chanda Romero, Roi Vinzon and Ms. Kuh Ledesma.

Defying the norms and standards of today's society, My Husband's Lover unveils the story of three people --- Lally (Carla Abellana), Vincent (Tom Rodriguez), and Eric (Dennis Trillo).  It will give today's thinking audience the new meaning of acceptance, forgiveness and love.

My Husband's Lover presents a love triangle.  But unlike the usual husband gets smitten by another woman, or a woman falls in love with another man, this primetime story is different.  Somehow, probably, and maybe, My Husband's Lover narrates a real life love story where a  woman discovers that her husband is in love with someone else - not a woman - but a man.

In the story, Lally is a faithful wife whose marriage to Vincent is an almost perfect and envied by women.  She is like Cinderella who is married to her Prince Charming living in a beautiful palace.  Although, she is living with her  mother-in law who is against the marriage.   But despite having a strict mother-in law, Lally and Vincent's family grew with two children.  Sheltered with love and all their needs, a woman really couldn't ask for more.

Her husband, Vincent, is a successful businessman, a loving husband to Lally and a responsible father to their kids. Unfortunately, Vincent has a dark secret he has been keeping from everyone ever since he was young.  He is a closeted gay

Vincent's friend, Eric, completes the love triangle.  Eric is Vincent's secret high school sweetheart.  He is an open gay to some of his friends but not to everyone. He had to leave Vincent to take care of his ill father who lives abroad.  Years later, Eric returns but finds out that Vincent is already married.

The good married life of Vincent eventually changes when his paths cross with Eric again. Eric was and still Vincent’s great love. But unlike Vincent, Eric is open that he is still in love with Vincent as well. Because of their strong feelings for each other, they end up having an affair.
Vincent tries to hide the affair from Lally by showering her with gifts and attention. However, Lally’s intuition tells her that something is wrong even though everything in her married life seems fine. That’s when she started to investigate. She eventually learned of Vincent’s darkest secret.

Will Lally give up on her husband or will she fight for their marriage? Will Vincent choose Eric over his family or will he stay with his wife and children?

The show has been trending on Twitter since its first week.  And it's rare that a primetime show continues to hit in this social networking site for weeks. And since the Philippines comprise mostly of Catholics and because My Husband's Lover is a controversial and somehow provocative in the eyes of the Conservatives, My Husband's Lover soon gets the ire of the Catholic church who tells their flock to be mindful of what they watch.  it has become an issue among communities - straight or otherwise.
