GU FAMILY BOOK (Episode 13)

The episode opens with Choi Kang Chi revealing his reasons why he wants to become a complete human  being – it is because of Dam Yeo Wool. 

It is followed by Yeo Wool convincing her father, Master Dam Pyeong Joon, to guide Kang Chi.  She claims she will train him but her father is worried that she will let him slack.  Thus, he appoints Gon to take care of Kang Chi’s training.  But Yeo Wool explains that Gon and Kang Chi are not always in good terms and most of the time ends up in a fight.  Gon suggests to co-train Kang Chi because he obeys Lady Yeo Wool.

Yeo Wool drops a sack of beans beside Kang Chi.  She tells him she will train him together with Gon.   She adds that as a requirement to help him become human, he must count the number of beans inside the sack.  Kang Chi couldn’t believe what he has to do!

Dam Pyeong Joon is having a conversation with Admiral Lee Soon Sin who asks the questions “How can you stop one’s feelings for another? How can you stop the wind from blowing?”  But Pyeong Joon worries about the fact that he slayed Kang Chi’s father.  And this fact might hurt both Kang Chi and Yeo Wool.

Meanwhile, Yeo Wool inquires about Kang Chi’s parents while the latter is counting the beans.  Since Kang Chi lost count, he recounts the beans.  While doing so, Yeo Wool continues to talk to Kang Chi and suggests to find out about his mom.  But Kang Chi says he doesn’t have time for someone who abandoned him in the river.

At the Hundred Year Inn, Jo Kwan Woong has a new guest named Ja Hong Myung from Japan. Jo Kwan Woong tries to please his guests who are obviously very important because they are talking about acquisitions. 

But the Japanese assistant reminds him that he has not acquired everything – referring to the naval base.  But Jo Kwan Woong assures his guests that it will be well taken cared of.  Outside, Jo Kwan Woong orders Deputy Seo to check on his men because his guests know more than what they should.

Back at the academy, Kang Chi is still counting the beans when he felt something.  He sensed something scary from the mountains. 

 In the forest, leaves wither as a pair of red glimmering eyes open up.  When they seek the help Master Gong Dal, the wise man believes Kang Chi has become weak.  He gives him a medicine the master himself concocted. 

Gong Dal shares that once he find the right person to replace him, he wants to sell his medicine, travel around the country and find himself a woman. 

But Kang Chi contradicts him about having a woman.  The wise man, however, stress that he is more young at heart than Kang Chi.  When Yeo Wool asks Gong Dal if he has someone in mind to replace him, the master gives a hint that the person is a hot-tempered guy.  Hearing this, Kang Chi advises that the master should spank that person. 

When Kang Chi volunteers to spank the person being eyed for the post of Gong Dal, the master hit him in the head as the answer. 

Dam Pyeong Joon calls for Park Tae Seo.  He handed him a pouch owned by Park Moo Sol.  Here, it is revealed that Park Moo Sol is one of the Four Masters. 

He represented the chrysanthemum with wealth that saved so many citizens from hunger. 

Master Dam gives the pouch to Tae Seo as instructed by Park Moo Sol.  He also relays to Tae Seo messages of love from his father.

Kang Chi continues with his counting when he hears a little noise.  He sees Yeo Wool asleep. Then she suddenly falls from her seat.  Kang Chi catches him and lets her rest in his shoulders.  Thinking she is sleeping, Kang Chi answers her questions about his parents.  He thanked Yeo Wool for asking him.  Unknown to him, Yeo Wool is awake.

Park Tae Seo is contemplating on his mission when Kang Chi calls him.  The two are having a good talk.  Tae Seo asks Kang Chi how much Park Moo Sol knows about him and what does he feel when he transforms.

Kang Chi explains his body burns all over and he has become oversensitive hearing multiple sounds at the same time.  Tae Seo asks him if he remembers who he is when in that form.  Kang Chi reveals at first he couldn’t but later on he understands that it is him and soon he can control his feelings as well.

Then he blurted out of the blue that Yeo Wool has been a big help to him.  Kang Chi shares that even after she saw him change, she wasn't disgusted and helped him remember his name.  He adds that it is strange to find his heart always at ease and his pain and anger subsides when he is with Yeo Wool.

Tae Seo tells him that he must be in love to which he agrees but when he realizes what the former just said, he retracted his answer.  In their conversation, Tae Seo tells Kang Chi not to be obligated anymore about him or his sister, Chung Jo, adding all the sacrifices Kang Chi made for the Park family is enough to make Tae Seo grateful to him forever.  He stressed that just like the Hundred Year Inn, Kang Chi’s friendship s important to Tae Seo.

Yeo Wool searches for Kang Chi who is not in his room when she overhears other teachers and students talking about Kang Chi and their eagerness to have him kick out of the school.

In the forest, the mysterious man targets his prey while at the Choong Hwa Gwan, Chung Jo gets to learn the five drum dance.  Wol San gets jealous because she thinks she deserves to learn the art than Chung Jo.  But the head gisaeng tells her that she doesn’t deserve to learn the five drum dance because she was never interested and even if she is, the head gisaeng thinks Wol San will use it to lure more men.

At the academy the following day, Kang Chi fell asleep while counting the beans.  Mischievous Yeo Wool arrives in the pavilion.  Seeing Kang Chi asleep, she tries to hit him but the half-mythical, half-human was quick to block her and even push her down on the floor.  To let her go, Yeo Wool bites Kang Chi’s hand!  When asked why did she do it, Yeo Wool gives Kang Chi some lessons about counterattack. 

Then Yeo Wool starts to inquire about Kang Chi’s whereabouts at night explaining that brothers are worried.  But Kang Chi refutes it saying they are weary of him.  Yeo Wool explains it is because the brothers don’t know him well yet just like when Kang Chi was trying to accept Yeo Wool, the brothers need time.  
 
Then Kang Chi suddenly sits closer to Yeo Wool.  He teases her that she has been nagging and looks feminine lately.   Clueless of his tricks, Yeo Wool realizes later that Kang Chi is just kidding.  She is about to punch him when they heard Seung’s urgent call.

Seung delivers the bad news that three dead bodies were found dead in the mountains.   

The news spread all over town about the casualties.  Sojung sees the bodies being investigated while Jo Kwan Woong receives the news and presumes Choi Kang Chi did it.  He plans to keep Kang Chi’s identity from being known.  The wicked retired officer wants to spread fear among people and use this against the admiral.  Meanwhile, the admiral has ordered his deputy to seek the incident report from the police.  He relays his willingness to help in the investigation.  He also orders his staff to make sure the no one seeds fear among the citizens or the admiral will deal with them harshly.

Brothers at the academy confront Choi Kang Chi. Yeo Wool tries to stop it thru his father but the latter refuses saying he could only stop it temporarily and the only solution is for Kang Chi to earn their trust.   

The brothers ask Kang Chi of his whereabouts the previous nights following the deaths of three persons in the forest.  But Kang Chi refuses to answer because he knows they are suspecting him.  He adds that whatever he says will sound like an excuse that the brothers will not believe.  He also stress to the brothers that he is used to such horrible treatment. 

One of the brothers commented that a non-human like Kang Chi acting like human is sickening.  This pushed Kang Chi to pull by his collar the said brother, leading the rest of the group to pull out their swords and aim it to Kang Chi. Master Gong Dal interferes.  He orders his students to put down their swords and Kang Chi to let go.  

The master questions Jin Sung that as a leader, he should have controlled the brothers to avoid such confrontations.  The others answered for him and justified their actions.  The bottomline is they do not want to live with Kang Chi in the academy.  The master Gong Dal then asks them to give him proof that Choi Kang Chi caused them harm and proof that he is responsible for the fatalities in the woods.  If they find proof, the master will kick Kang Chi himself out of the academy.  However, the master adds that if their suspicions are incorrect, all of them must kneel and beg Kang Chi for forgiveness.  

At Gong Dal’s quarters, Kang Chi asks the master why did he defend him.  Kang Chi explains that he doesn’t want people watching over him like a hawk.  When the master asks him of his whereabouts, Kang Chi stops and tells that he will leave. Just as he turns his back, the master tells him that if Kang Chi wants to stay for a long time with Yeo Wool, he must learn how to get along with others in the academy.

As soon as he steps out of the quarters, Gon is out asking Kang Chi why didn’t he tell everyone about his whereabouts.  Kang Chi asks him to keep it a secret especially to Yeo Wool.  But as soon as Kang Chi left Gon, Yeo Wool appears and ask about the secret!

At the Hundred Year Inn, head gisaeng Chun meets with Jo Kwan Woong who wants to treat his foreign guest during the Lantern Festival.  More so, the foreign guest – Ja Hong Myung – wants Chun Seo Ryun to play the five drum dance.

In the evening, Choi Kang Chi leaves the premises of the academy.  Unknown to him, a brother follows him in the forest.  But while running after Kang Chi, brother Kim sees a red-eyed growling creature in the forest. 

Scared, brother Kim runs to the forest screaming hoping to find a place to hide when he stumbles upon Kang Chi. Kang Chi tells him to stay quiet.  Then he sensed the presence of the creature.  Kang Chi dares him to come out. 

He sees the creature looking at them with fierce red eyes.  When the creature sees Kang Chi’s bracelet glimmers, it disappears.  While Kang Chi confronts brother Kim for following him, Yeo Wool appears with Gon explaining to the brother that Kang Chi checks out the forest because he felt a strange vibe in the woods.  

Seeing Gon and Yeo Wool together, Kang Chi calls Gon a squealer suggesting even that he should have informed the entire village.  But Yeo Wool defends her guard saying Gon did not squeal, she is just good in finding out.  She asks him why did he keep it a secret, Kang Chi explains that he doesn’t know yet the identity of the creature and he is worried that it would fear the brothers if they find out there is a loose creature in the woods.  With such concern, Yeo Wool advises brother Kim to keep the information from everyone in the academy.

In the middle of the night, Sujong gets a surprise visitor – Wol Ryung.

The following morning at the dining hall, Kang Chi’s table is isolated from the rest.  One of the brothers even stops eating and leaves the room when he sees Kang Chi.

Since he is used to being bullied, Kang Chi ignores them and sits down to eat.  Brother Kim, on the other hand, brings his table across Kang Chi’s. 

Yeo Wool, meanwhile, unveils a box of hanbok. She gets excited seeing it.  Then he invites Choi Kang Chi to accompany her to the village to hang up a wishing lantern for the festival. 

He tells Kang Chi to meet her at the village restaurant.  Kang Chi asks why aren’t they going together, Yeo Wool gives an alibi that she needs to take care of something first at the village.  

Kang Chi returns to his task to count the beans when he receives a guest, the assistant of Chung Jo.  She tells him that Chung Jo will be presented in a parade as the flower gisaeng for the lantern festival. 

Indeed, Chung Jo has been chosen to be the flower gisaeng. 

During her rites when she registers as an official gisaeng, she changes her name from Chung, which means clear and Jo meaning dawn into gisaeng name of Chung meaning blue and Jo as new.  Kang Chi was informed that Park Chung Jo doesn’t want him to know about her status. 

Kang Chi runs towards the village town hoping to see Chung Jo.  He was able to catch the tail of the parade and followed it until Chung Jo and the rest of the gisaengs arrive at the Hundred Year Inn.  Just before Chung Jo enters the gate, he calls her.  Chung Jo heard him and searched for him. But as soon as she found him, Chung Jo turns her back on him.  Kang Chi approaches her.  But the lady in front of him is a coldhearted gisaeng who tells him if he wants to see her, he must come to the Choon Hwa Gwan.

The villagers are busy with the lantern festival. Almost everyone is out on the streets including Yeo Wool who is covered with an overcoat.  She is waiting for Kang Chi in front of the village restaurant for hours.  Meanwhile, Kang Chi has been pondering for some time in front of the Hundred Year Inn over what he just witnessed.  On his way back to the academy, a group of children carrying lanterns pass by.  Then he remembers his “date” with Yeo Wool! 

Yeo Wool is losing hope.  She thinks that Kang Chi might have forget her when she suddenly sees from a far the man she has been waiting for – Kang Chi!

Yeo Wool is all smiles and so ready for her lantern festival “date.” Kang Chi is getting closer to her when he suddenly walked past her!

Yeo Wool’s jacket slips and falls on the ground but Kang Chi just apologize.  He did not recognize Yeo Wool until she calls his name.  When Kang Chi turns around, he sees a beautiful lady wearing hanbok - Yeo Wool.

With lanterns carrying wishes, will Yeo Wool and Kang Chi’s wish come true?  To whom will this lantern festival date become more meaningful – is it Yeo Wool or is it Kang Chi?
