GU FAMILY BOOK EPISODE 1

EPISODE 1

Gu Family Book opens with the Moonlight Garden, a mythical place where a divine creature lives for a thousand years to protect Mt Jiri.  Sojung, the Buddhist monk walks in the middle of the forest to visit the divine creature Wol Ryung.  

But Wol Ryung is flying around and running in the middle of the forest.  He gets curious in hearing a drum beating, which comes from the performance of a head gisaeng.  While watching, Wol Ryung sees a noblewoman, her brother and her assistant in a carriage brought to the gisaeng house.  They were sold by the state after their father was executed for treason.  Wol Ryung witnessed how Yoon Seo Hwa tried hard to fight from becoming a gisaeng.  She even endured some days and nights without food and water while being tied in a tree. She recalled how her father was betrayed and killed by his friend officer Jo Gwang woon, who is obsessed to sleep with Seo Hwa.  

Wol Ryung sees the hardships of Yoon Seo Hwa.  He wants to help her but reminds himself that he promised Sojung not to meddle with human affairs.  As Wol Ryung looks on Seo Hwa’s state, little did he know that he is slowly falling in love with the young woman.  In the end, he decides to help her but was stopped by Sojung.  When he gets past the monk, Seo Hwa is no longer in the tree. Seo Hwa is ill.  When she learned she is inside the gisaeng house, she reminded her assistant that she would rather die than become a gisaeng.  But the head gisaeng Jung Hye Young has made a strategy to force Seo Hwa to be part of them- to torture her brother in front of Seo Hwa!  

Seo Hwa then undergoes the process of becoming a gisaeng.  And on the night she is about to be registered as one, she heard other gisaengs that Jo Gwang Woon will sleep with her.  This bad news reached his brother too and immediately schemed to help Seo Hwa escape.  The head gisaeng discovers that Seo Hwa escaped and the woman left in the room is her assistant, Dam.  Aiming to please Jo Gwang Woon, the head gisaeng sends Seo Hwa’s assistant pretending to be Seo Hwa to the officer’s  room while at the same time orders the search for the noblewoman-turned-gisaeng.  Seo Hwa escaped with her brother.  

While running in the middle of the forest, Seo Hwa advises her brother that they should split up to survive and promised each other to meet again. When her brother left, Seo Hwa decides to end her life but stops when she sees little lights floating around her.  

Wol Ryung is on her side when she lost consciousness.  Since then, Wol Ryung has taken care of Seo Hwa.  But while Seo Hwa is safe in Wol Ryung’s place, her brother was executed while Dama hanged herself to death. And while officer Jo Gwang woon dispatches a team led by Sheriff Dam Pyeong Joon to investigate the reported gumiho and search for Seo Hwa’s body, Wol Ryung tells Sojung that he wants to become human because he gave his heart to the lady in the Moonlight Garden.
